Physical Education
At Castle Primary School, we believe that Physical Education plays a vital role in promoting healthy, active lifestyles and developing confident, resilient and successful learners. We use the PE Hub curriculum to deliver a progressive programme of learning that is aligned with the National Curriculum and enables all children to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to enjoy physical activity throughout their lives.
Our PE curriculum aims to inspire children to develop a lifelong love of sport and physical activity. We encourage all pupils to participate fully, challenge themselves and strive for personal success. Whilst competition is valued and celebrated, we place equal importance on teamwork, effort, sportsmanship and enjoyment, ensuring that every child feels included and motivated to take part.
In Key Stage 1, the focus is on developing fundamental movement skills, coordination, balance, agility and control, providing the foundations for future sporting success. Pupils participate in units such as Run, Jump, Throw, Dance, Gymnastics, Attack, Defend, Shoot, Hit, Catch, Run and Send and Return. Through these activities, children build confidence in movement, improve physical literacy and begin to understand the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle.
In Key Stage 2, children build upon these foundations through a broader range of sports and physical activities. Pupils develop tactical awareness, teamwork, leadership and sport-specific skills through units including Tennis, Swimming, Gymnastics, Dance, Hockey, Athletics and Netball. As they progress through the school, children are encouraged to refine their skills, evaluate their performance and demonstrate increasing levels of independence and responsibility.
Swimming forms an important part of our curriculum, with pupils in Years 5 and 6 accessing swimming lessons to develop confidence, competence and safety in the water. This ensures children are provided with the opportunity to achieve key National Curriculum swimming outcomes before they leave primary school.
We are committed to providing pupils with opportunities to experience both intra-school and inter-school competition. Children regularly participate in sporting events hosted by the local secondary school, where they compete alongside pupils from neighbouring schools. In addition, pupils are encouraged to take part in a range of local festivals, tournaments and sporting events throughout the year. These experiences help children develop teamwork, resilience, respect and sportsmanship whilst fostering a sense of pride in representing their school.
By the time pupils leave our school, they will have developed the physical skills, confidence and positive attitudes needed to lead active, healthy lives. They will understand the value of participation, competition and personal achievement, and be equipped with the knowledge and motivation to continue enjoying sport and physical activity throughout their lives.
