French

At Castle, in KS2 the children learn French. We use a programme called Language Angels which provides a comprehensive and ready to teach scheme of work.

We use the Language Angels resources to ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum. The curriculum uses a wide variety of topics and themes which inspires and excites our pupils.

There are four key language learning skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing. These skills will be taught, and all essential grammar will be covered in an age-appropriate way across the primary phase. This will enable children to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning and helping the children improve overall attainment in other subject areas.

Children will progressively gain, use and apply an increasing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes. They will build blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language.

We hope all children will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating. Learning a second language will also offer children the opportunity to discover relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and be aware of their self, others and cultural differences.

When children leave Castle Primary School, they will be able to:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written French from a range of authentic sources.

  • speak with confidence, fluency and freedom, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions.

  • write for a variety of purposes and audiences, using the grammatical structures that they have learnt.

  • explore and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in French.
