Personal, Social, Health and Economic education
At Castle School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education plays an important role in helping children develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and confidence they need to become happy, healthy, safe and responsible individuals. We use mixed-age planning from Oak Academy, which we adapt to meet the needs of our pupils and school community, ensuring that key knowledge and skills are revisited and developed throughout their primary education. Through engaging lessons, stories, discussions, role play and practical activities, children explore relationships, emotional wellbeing, physical and mental health, keeping safe, online safety, diversity, belonging, responsibilities and life beyond school.
Our PSHE curriculum helps children to understand themselves, build positive relationships and make informed and responsible choices. Children learn to recognise and manage their emotions, develop resilience, make healthy and safe choices, respect and celebrate differences, and understand how their actions can affect themselves and others. We provide a safe and inclusive environment where children feel valued, respected and confident to share their views, listen to others and seek support when needed. Our aim is for every child to leave Castle School with the confidence, knowledge and skills to thrive, make positive choices and contribute positively to their school and wider community.
By the time our pupils leave primary school, they will:
Understand themselves – recognise and manage emotions, develop self-awareness, confidence and resilience.
Build positive relationships – demonstrate kindness, respect, empathy and an appreciation of diversity.
Make healthy and safe choices – understand how to look after their physical and mental health and keep themselves safe, including online.
Make responsible choices – understand the impact of their actions, take responsibility and contribute positively to their school and wider community.
Be confident and prepared for the future – express their views, know when and how to seek help, and develop the skills and attitudes needed for the next stage of their lives
At Castle School, we recognise that PSHE is not only taught through dedicated lessons but is woven throughout school life, relationships, routines and our wider curriculum. Every interaction is an opportunity to develop children's understanding of themselves and others. We work in partnership with families and our wider community to ensure that our pupils leave Castle School as confident, caring, resilient and responsible young people, ready to make a positive contribution to the world around them.
