Religious Education

At Castle Primary School, Religious Education (RE) plays an important role in helping pupils understand the diverse world in which they live. Through the Devon and Torbay Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2024–2029, pupils explore a range of religious and non-religious worldviews, enabling them to develop knowledge, understanding, respect and curiosity about different beliefs, practices and ways of life.

Our RE curriculum is designed to encourage pupils to:

  • Make sense of a range of religious and non-religious worldviews
  • Understand the impact and significance of beliefs on individuals, communities and society
  • Make connections between different worldviews and their own experiences
  • Ask thoughtful questions and develop skills of enquiry, interpretation and reflection
  • Appreciate diversity and challenge prejudice through respectful discussion and debate

Following the Devon and Torbay syllabus, pupils study Christianity alongside other major world religions, including Islam, Hinduism and Judaism, as well as non-religious worldviews such as Humanism. Learning is structured around key questions that encourage pupils to investigate beliefs, values, sources of authority, ways of living and the meaning and purpose of life.

The syllabus adopts a modern religion and worldviews approach, recognising that people express beliefs in diverse ways and that understanding different perspectives helps pupils become informed, respectful and active citizens. Pupils build substantive knowledge about religions and worldviews, learn disciplinary approaches to religious enquiry and develop personal reflections on questions of meaning, identity and belonging.

RE contributes strongly to pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and supports our school values of Resilience, Respect and Reach. Through discussion, reflection and engagement with different beliefs and traditions, pupils learn to value diversity while developing their own sense of identity and place within the wider world.

We enrich learning through visits, visitors, celebrations, artefacts, stories and opportunities to engage with people from a variety of faith and belief communities, ensuring that RE is relevant, meaningful and rooted in real-life experiences.
