Science
At our school, we believe science should inspire curiosity about the world and develop children's understanding of how things work. We use the Oak Academy science curriculum, carefully aligned to the National Curriculum, to provide a coherent and progressive sequence of learning that builds scientific knowledge, skills and understanding from Year 1 to Year 6.
Our science curriculum aims to develop inquisitive learners who are confident to ask questions, explore ideas and think critically about the world around them. We place a strong emphasis on the development of scientific vocabulary, ensuring that children can communicate their understanding clearly and accurately. Through discussion, investigation and practical enquiry, pupils learn to work scientifically by observing, predicting, testing, recording and evaluating.
The curriculum is organised to build knowledge over time. In Key Stage 1, pupils develop their understanding of Plants, Animals Including Humans, and Living Things and Life Cycles, establishing fundamental scientific concepts and encouraging observation of the natural world.
In Lower Key Stage 2, children deepen their understanding through the study of Plants and Animals (Skeletons), Animals Including Humans (Digestion), Solids, Liquids and Gases, and Living Things and Their Habitats. They begin to make connections between scientific concepts and use increasingly precise scientific language.
In Upper Key Stage 2, pupils develop a deeper understanding of more complex scientific ideas. In Year 5, they study Animals Including Humans, Properties, Changes and Separating Materials (Properties Focus), Forces, Light, and Earth and Space. In Year 6, learning builds further through Living Things and Their Habitats (Classification), Evolution and Inheritance, Light, Properties and Changes of Materials (Properties), and Animals Including Humans.
Throughout their journey, children are encouraged to be curious, resilient and reflective scientists. They learn to question evidence, investigate ideas and communicate findings with confidence. By the time they leave our school, pupils will have developed a secure body of scientific knowledge, a rich scientific vocabulary and an enthusiasm for understanding the world around them, preparing them well for the next stage of their education and for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world.
